This special issue of KMAE contains 7 articles:

- Two of them deal with the status of eel fisheries in England (Apprahamian and Walker) and with the recreational fishery in the Loire (Baisez and Lafaille). These articles are good examples of the help to the management of this species.

- The works on the state of stocks are illustrated by an article which proposes a method for assessing the freshwater distribution of yellow eel (Lasne and Lafaille) and by another one dedicated to the study of silver eel escapement, a stage of development where the data are rare (Amilhat et al.).

- Finally three articles illustrate the diversity of the researches developed on several aspects of the eel biology:
• Diel feeding activity and intensity (Costa-Dias and Lobon-Cervia)
• Relationships between individual behaviour and morphometry in glass eels (Bardonnet et al.).
• Relationships between the macroparasite communities and its abundance (Fazio et al.).
